Free Printable Summer Reading Logs
The school year is winding down, the temperature is rising, and if you’re a homeschool mom like me, you’re probably looking forward to the upcoming summer. I know I am. I’m excited to be taking a break from school work and curriculum, excited to have more time for outdoor adventures, excited for fishing and camping and swimming and fireworks. And even though we will be taking a break from structured schoolwork, we will continue to read. Why? Because reading, although it certainly makes its way into our school curriculum, isn’t actually schoolwork. It’s a lifestyle - a daily ritual, like eating meals or spending outside, and one we all enjoy.
Last year, our local library hosted a summer reading challenge where they handed out summer reading logs to kids (and adults), which could be turned in throughout the summer for raffle tickets to earn a prize. My two older kids loved it! It totally inspired a reading binge in both of them simply because they loved the idea of having a chart to fill out to track their reading. They showed off the amount of books they read to anyone with working eyeballs. So this year I created my own summer reading logs to share with you.
Using a reading log is a great way to motivate your kids to keep reading throughout the summer. You can put a fun twist on it by offering a prize if they read a certain number of books (popsicles are always a great incentive in the summertime). I’ll even be printing one out and using it for myself. Why? Because my kids love to see me reading and, as the saying goes, kids will always do what you do, not what you say. Last year, my kids loved it when I participated in the summer reading challenge with them. They poured over my reading log, asking me about the books I was reading, and were delighted when they discovered they were reading more books than me. It was fun for all of us.
There are four different designs of reading logs, so download whichever one you think will speak to your little bookworm the most - or download all four! They’re completely free for your summer reading enjoyment. You just have to enter your email address.
